IS THAT BAMBOO IN MY DRINK?
IS THAT BAMBOO IN MY DRINK?
The controversy about plastic straws has raised concerns all around the world in the recent years. Plastic straws are one of the most widely used and disposed of. Our choice of plastic products can affect a lot on our environment, wildlife and our future humanity.
According to Statista in 2018, the EU has a high consumption of single-use plastic drinking straws (23.5 billions per year). Specifically, UK consumes by far the most (8.5 billions per year) with Germany being the runner-up (4.8 billions per year).
There are more people now turning against plastic straws and even some countries with corporates that implement bans on plastic straws. Therefore, a variety of eco-friendly alternatives were introduced. In which, bamboo is chosen here at Orient Handicraft and it is one of the most common used materials for straws.
Not only does bamboo look and feel great, but it is 100% sustainable, fully biodegradable, and can be harvested in as little as 3-5 years. Bamboo releases 30% more oxygen into our atmosphere and absorbs more carbon dioxide when compared to other plants.
With the intention of promoting sustainable global trade through bamboo straws, in 2018 our company participated in a pitching contest – International Business Acceleration Contest hosted by German SEPT organization. We were honored to receive the winner award and hope we can contribute to see plastic straws banned ultimately.
Aside from straws, we also manufacture other bamboo kitchenware like plates, bowls and utensils, etc. They come in many shapes and sizes and we also accept custom requests from our business clients as long as we can help spreading the awareness of sustainability.
